Camera Obscura

Without getting our geek on too much… this place is fantastic! It is the worlds oldest, working camera obscura. It is cheaper than chips to visit and has a great little museum attached to it that has a great collection of taxidermy. A really under appreciated gem in Dumfries!

Annandale Distillery

You don’t need to be a whisky lover to thoroughly enjoy a tour here. Although you get samples as you go around, it isn’t compulsory. Learning about the history and how this liquid gold drink is made, is fascinating and enjoyable. Following it up with a bite to eat from the cafe too rounds the day off nicely as it is delicious!

Caerlaverock Castle

This is a genuine, medieval castle with roots back to 1300 and earlier! Not only is this an absolutely picturesque castle but you can actually get inside by crossing the moat, just like the conquerors of old. Set within beautiful grounds, you can spend an entire day exploring and going back in time.

Caledonia Park

Formally known as Gretna Gateway Outlet Village, this is the place to get your shop on! If your wallet/purse is burning a hole in your pocket, this place will help put the fire out. From clothes to gifts to fragrances and kitchen accessories and food - there is so much to see, that you really can shop till you drop here!

Savings Bank Museum

This small unassuming building was where, back in the early 1800’s, a reverend established the worlds first savings bank. The guided tour lasts 90 minutes and is lead by some fabulous history buffs. You really will be amazed by the amount of history that was made in this little stone building.

Grey Mares Tail

If you would like a bit of a challenge with nothing but spectacular views, then look no further than the Gray Mares Tail. The waterfall splashes down 60m from Loch Skeen. The walk up to the loch from the car park below is challenging in parts but well worth the effort. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for the wild goats, ospreys and peregrine falcons too!
